Cuomo to close more Prisons
"As of Dec. 31, 2019, there were 44,279 inmates in the state prison system. The closure of 17 prisons has eliminated more than 6,650 beds and saved the state approximately $193 million annually, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The governor's office noted that the average annual cost to house one prisoner in New York is $69,000" Harding, R. (1/27/20)
This is an interesting article and I believe closing prisons is a good thing. However, what happens to our loved ones if its the facility they are in thats closing? We don't want them sent further away or double bunking in an over crowded facility. That's a disaster waiting to happen. If facilities are closing, our loved ones need to come home. We must find alternatives to detention and separation of families. Monitored supervision, Rehabilitative programs, Reduced sentences...
Change is happening but at a snails pace. We need aggressive progressive change, NOW!!
